My sister is a delightful human being. She just happens to have Down Syndrome. However, she isn’t defined by that. Krista is defined by love. Krista is defined by acceptance. Krista is defined by joy. When she was about 2 years of age I taught her the song “You Are my Sunshine.” I would play and sing at the piano. She would stand alongside me and sing to the top of her voice….always about ¼ beat behind me. She was relying on me to provide the words for her.
Fast forward 40 years. Krista has learned to play the ukulele and now the guitar. We got her a guitar that was fitted to equip her well, something that is shorter to accommodate her smaller hands and arms. She loves strumming her guitar. She not only can sing “You are My Sunshine” without any assistance, she can sing all of those words by memory of every single verse.
In Luke 6:40 it states that “The student is not above the teacher, but everyone who is fully trained will be like their teacher.” Krista learned from me as I taught her. Now she plays without direction. Seeing her play brings the teacher (me) great joy. Can you imagine how God feels about us when we take His teachings and live them out in our life? We have the perfect teachings available so we are without excuse. It’s time for us to quit lagging a quarter beat behind and learn the whole song, not leaving out a word or a verse. Let’s start strumming.
